Knights dominate Avon 48-0
Knights roll up over 400 yards of total offense in stunning win

Avon - The LeRoy Knights opened defense of their Section 5 Class C title in Avon on Friday, September 6th under pristine weather conditions. A large crowd of Avon and LeRoy fans anticipated a classic matchup of power football between these two sectional finalists of a year ago. What transpired on the field was hardly anticipated by either squad or their supporters. Brian Moran's talent laden Knights completely dominated the hometown Braves with an offense that scored at will via the ground and air, and a defense that swarmed to the ball to surrender just 105 yards of total offense by the Braves.

LeRoy's Jeremy Cosimeno got the Knights off to a fine drive start with a 23 yd kickoff return to the LeRoy 35. LeRoy star QB Joe Shaughnessy showed his quick feet on first down picking up 12 yards on a broken play. RB Joe Cosimeno, LeRoy's leading ground gainer in 2001, burst off the left side for 31 yards on his first carry of the year after stellar blocks from FB Jake Whiting, center Jake Syracuse, LG Ian Christiansen, and LT Ryan Duthe. Several plays later, RG Jason Hodge, and all-state RT Don Miller created a grand opening for QB Shaughnessy to pull off a 16 yd dash to put the ball at the Avon 4. At the 8:08 mark, Shags blasted over the goal line behind Miller to put the Knights up 6-0. Haley's Comet arrived with a rare Brendan Fulmer miss on the PAT kick. Fulmer more than atoned for his boot with incredible kickoffs that consistently were through the Avon end zone throughout the contest.

Avon moved the ball well on their first possession as powerful Braves FB Mike Wysowski followed his big upfront boys Colin Conine and Shawn Welch for tough inside yards. Avon varsity newcomer Greg Stanton showed his running prowess with a nice 7 yd gain of his own. Coach Andy Englert's troops were answering back with a deliberate power running game. Matters changed quickly when LeRoy's Jeremy Cosimeno snagged an interception (pretty much with one hand) at the 5:40 mark to give the visitors great field position at the Avon 38. Shaughnessy continued to give the Braves fits as he dashed 24 yards to the Braves' 14. Three plays later Shaughnessy had his second score of the evening as he bulled his way over from the 4. The Fulmer kick was true and the Knights were up 13-0.

Another Fulmer bomb put the Braves at the 20 for their second offensive series. Avon speedster Ryan Farley shifted nicely through the seams and picked up 13 yards. On the ensuing third down, Jeremy Cosimeno, Miller, and Syracuse stopped Farley short of a first down to force an Avon punt. The Knights started at their 33 and were met with some tough Avon defense. A critical 3rd and 8 was converted as Shaughnessy completed his first pass of the season, a quick 12 yd strike to sure-handed TE Dan Panek.

The second quarter began with LeRoy's Joe Caccamise running wild through the Avon defense on 3 occasions. Shaughnessy notched his third TD of the contest at the 10:32 mark on a 14 yd run. The Knights were now in command 20-0 over the stunned Braves. Avon received great field position after a Fulmer squib kick and made the most of it. Farley (13 carries for 51 yds) used his speed to jet around right end for a big gain. The Braves plowed to the LeRoy 24 before disaster struck in the form of a second interception, this time by the 6'6 Fulmer. A penalty after the pickoff gave the Knights the ball at their own 23. LeRoy's Mighty Joes, Cosimeno and Caccamise, continued to shine on the ground behind stellar play by the O line. With just over 3 minutes to go in the first half, Coach Moran called for the Cosimeno Special. Joe took the pitch from QB Shaughnessy and headed right only to pull up and heave a perfect strike to a streaking Fulmer. The play covered 53 yards. Fulmer lined up to kick the PAT only to take a pitch from snap-holder Shaughnessy to run in for a 2 pt. PAT. The score was now 28-0, LeRoy.

More of the same followed. A Fulmer kick through the end zone, a Avon drive start at the 20, and a nasty LeRoy defense led by LB Jason Hodge (10 tackles), Don Miller (9), Jeremy Cosimeno (8), and sophomore LB Andrew Fox (6). The resulting Avon 3-and-out would prove costly to the Braves as the Knights quick-strike offense was in gear. With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Shaughnessy converted a 3rd and 18 screen to RB Jake Whiting. Jake received some great seal blocking, allowing him to ramble 58 yards to the Avon end zone. The Fulmer PAT kick made it 35-0 at the half.

The Braves hoped to fare better in the second stanza of the contest but matters did not improve. The locals went 3-and-out on their first offensive series and were forced to punt. Joe Cosimeno grabbed the punt at his own 36 and ran untouched 64 yards for a score at the 10:14 mark of the third quarter. Down 42-0, the Braves were forced to pass. LeRoy's Brendan Fulmer notched his second interception of the game to again stymie the Braves' offense. The Avon defense did force a rarity, a LeRoy punt, on the Knights' possession after the Fulmer theft. Don Miller made sure the shutout would be preserved with some dominant line play and tackling.

LeRoy's final tally on the evening was earned by Joe Caccamise at the 2:40 mark of the third quarter with a 1 yd plunge. The powerful Caccamise had set up the TD burst with a stellar 45+ yard run off left tackle that left all but the referee wondering what had occurred on the play. Coming around the left side, Joe made a fine run and put his head down to garner some additional yardage when finally caught by the Braves' defense. Leading the play was RG Jason Hodge who was "grounded" after throwing a key block. Caccamise fell toward the turf but oddly bounced off of Hodge in such a manner that his knees never touched the ground to end the play. Realizing that he was never "down", Joe rambled on down the field before the disbelieving Braves were able to push him out at the 1.

The Knights and Braves played to a standoff in the final quarter as backups of both squads played well. LeRoy's backup QB Brandon Klinkbeil led the team with effectiveness as Jeremy Cosimeno and rugged Kenny Smith picked up 56 yards between the two of them on 13 carries. The Knights' Jimmy Macaluso notched 12 yards on 3 excellent efforts to help run out the clock on the Braves. The final read LeRoy 48, Avon 0.

The regular season showdown with rival Cal-Mum will take place this Friday, September 13th at Hartwood Park at 7:30 pm. The Raiders won big in their opener as well, a 66-0 shellacking of the Warsaw Tigers. The Raiders feature a powerful line and equally powerful and rugged running backs. CMCS star RB Ricky Riddle made short order of the Tigers with excellent speed and moves. Be sure to get to the game early as a large crowd will be on hand to witness the greatest rivalry in all of Section 5.
