Perry - The Oatkan Knights (currently the #4 ranked team in NY - Class C), traveled to Perry on 9/27 to face the host Yellowjackets in Game 4 of the regular season. Cool, wet, and windy weather made for very sloppy playing conditions. The Knights managed to tame the weather and a spirited Perry contingent to remain unbeaten (4-0) on the year. The large margin of victory allowed Coach Brian Moran a chance to play the entire team throughout the contest. LeRoy struck
twice for scores in the first quarter as Andrew Fox (1 yd) and Joe Shaughnessy
(22 yds) found paydirt, albeit mud, on scoring runs. Brendan Fulmer split
the uprights for the PAT after each TD. Senior RB Joe Cosimeno shrugged off an early thigh injury to score from 10 yards out with minutes remaining in the first half of play. Joe ran the ball only 3 times in the lopsided contest and made the most of it, gathering 48 yards total. The defense held strong and afforded Offensive Coach Chris Cappotelli another scoring opportunity in the waning moments of the half. The choice of play was right on target as was Shaughnessy's 11 yd strike to junior TE Jake Whiting. An earlier pass in the flats from Shags to Whiting set up the Whiting TD grab. Jake was the Knights' leading receiver on the night with 3 receptions for 53 yards. Fulmer added a 2 pt. PAT run off a fake PAT kick to give LeRoy a 36-0 halftime lead. The second team offense led by QB Brandon Klinkbeil took over in the second half and added two more scores against the Yellowjackets. The Knights' first drive of the second half was kept alive by a fake punt run by Joe Cosimeno who scrambled down to the Perry 16. LeRoy's tough running Jimmy Macaluso swept left end and powered his way to the Perry 2 yd line. Macaluso was the workhorse for the Knights' rushing game in the second half carrying the ball 11 times against the Perry first team defense. Going against the likes of Miller, Hodge, Syracuse, and Smith day in, day out in practice had Mac more than ready for the task. Klinkbeil bulled over from the 1 for a TD and the Knights were up 42-0 after the failed PAT run. Jeremy Cosimeno added the final score for LeRoy in the fourth quarter. Jeremy found a seam in the line, cut back against the grain, and turned on the jets to score from 81 yards away. The PAT run was stopped and the Knights were up 48-0. Perry looked to prevent the shutout and net a score of their own. Perry QB Justin Dueppengiesser lofted a beautiful pass to wideout Ryan Abbott who went the distance of 70 yards to notch the Perry TD. The PAT run was good, putting the final score at LeRoy 48, Perry 8. The LeRoy defense was solid in the bad weather conditions. Three sophomores combined for 32 tackles to lead the Knights: Tim Dieffenbacher (13, 7 solo), Andrew Fox (11) and Jason Spencer (8 and a FR). Senior stalwarts Jason Hodge (11) and Donny Miller (9) were excellent as usual for Coach Paladino's stingy defense. The Knights outgained Perry in total yards, 381 to 155. |
