SECTION 5 CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP 2002

NEW YORK STATE CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP 2002

Knights overwhelm Perry Yellowjackets 62-0
Knights spread the wealth as 8 team members score TDs; Avon up next in semifinals

LeRoy - The seniors on the LeRoy football squad were introduced at the start of the game as this would be their last time wearing the home black jerseys on the Hartwood Park gridiron. Moments later, the Oatkan Knights re-introduced themselves to their previous Week 4 opponent, the Perry Yellowjackets. The sectional quarterfinal matchup was played under cold, wet, and downright raw conditions. The Knights began the contest in a sluggish manner, fumbling the ball and victimizing themselves with penalties. When Brian Moran's juggernaut did kick it up a notch the results were devastating. The Knights would roll to a 62-0 rout, ironically the same score as last year's quarterfinal contest played against an overmatched Mynderse Academy. Next up, a semifinal showdown with another familiar opponent, Andy Englert's Avon Braves.

The Knights kicked off and the excellent kick coverage forced a Perry drive start at the Perry 11. After failing to register a first down, the Yellowjackets punted to the host Knights. Joe Shaughnessy and company would start the LeRoy offense at the Perry 34 after a 17 yard punt. The handoff on LeRoy's first play from scrimmage was muffed and Perry was back on offense at their own 35 after the miscue. Perry moved to a shotgun based offense to give the LeRoy defense a different look and to attempt some gadget plays. LeRoy Defensive Coach Andrew Paladino was prepared for the new look and would not let the visitors ruin his birthday evening. Seniors Kenny Smith, Donny Miller, and Jason Hodge stepped it up on defense and Perry went 3-and-out once more. Another poor punt of just 9 yards gave the hosts the ball on the Perry 43. The Knights pounded the ball at Perry with Andrew Fox and LeRoy's 3 Joes (Cosimeno, Caccamise, and Shaughnessy) all picking up big yardage. With 5:02 left in the first quarter, Jake Whiting notched the evening's first TD for the Knights on a one-yard plunge. The Brendan Fulmer PAT was solid and the 7-0 lead would only grow.

Perry would lose one net yard on their next drive start from their 20 after a Fulmer kickoff found the Perry end zone. LeRoy defensive end Jake Syracuse thwarted a Perry pitch sweep to the right to aptly kill the drive. A punt of just 7 yards gave the Knights a very short field of just 26 yards to score again. QB Shaughnessy threw a beautiful slant over the middle to Fulmer to pick up 20 yards and give the Knights a first-and-goal at the Perry 6. The Knights again mishandled the handoff and a Perry defender scooped up the loose pigskin, dashing out to the Perry 43. Three incomplete passes had the Yellowjackets punting again. LeRoy senior Jeremy Cosimeno raced in from his OLB position to block the Perry punt. The Knights took over on their own 47-yard line. The Knights methodically pounded the ball at the Perry defense as the cold, driving rain arrived. Shaughnessy would dash 7 yards around left end on the first play of the 2nd quarter to put the Knights' second TD on the scoreboard. 14-0 after the Fulmer PAT kick.

Perry had a beautiful midfield drive start after the Knights squibbed a short kick on the wet field. The visitors did manage a first down and penetrated to the LeRoy 38 before the Knights' defense stiffened. Jake Syracuse once again came up big on defense with a batted down pass and a run stuff. Another poor Perry punt gave the Knights the ball at their own 27. A penalty moved the ball back to the 22. The Knights put together a beautiful 11-play, 78 yd drive with sophomore RB Andrew Fox taking it in the final 16 yards for the score at the 4:40 mark. 21-0 after the Fulmer PAT boot. The LeRoy offense, averaging over 45 points per game, would score 2 more times before the half. Perry's mishandling of a 4th down punt snap gave the Knights the ball at the Perry 11. Two plays later, Joe Caccamise negotiated those 11 yards for a TD at the 2:45 mark (28-0). Perry ran the ball back well on the ensuing kickoff but again were stopped, only to punt poorly again. Sophomore lineman Jason Spencer came up with a big sack to thwart the Perry offensive attack. QB Joe Shaughnessy directed a masterful drive down the field, mixing in timely passes with the already established rushing attack. With a half minute left in the first half, Joe lofted a TD pass to Brendan Fulmer in the back of the end zone for a 12 yd score. At the half, the Knights enjoyed a 34-0 lead.

LeRoy received the ball at the start of the 2nd half and moved it well before once again fumbling it away to the Yellowjackets. The Perry drive from their own 38 went backwards with Donny Miller and company smashing through the Perry O-line. Joe Cosimeno led the LeRoy defense with 10 tackles, followed by Jason Hodge (8), Miller (7), Fox (7), and sophomore star Tim Dieffenbacher (7). Kenny Smith was also causing mayhem for the visitors, registering 6 tackles, a sack, and generally busting Yellowjackets up. A punt of just 5 yards got the Knights back in business at the Perry 32. Jake Whiting ripped off a 14 yd gain to put the ball at the Perry 18. Fox picked up the remaining 18 yards on back-to-back carries of 3 and 15 yards, the latter for a score and a 41-0 lead at the 7:36 mark of the 3rd quarter.

Perry would surrender field position at their own 20 on the subsequent possession as Miller recovered a fumble. Jeremy Cosimeno darted in from 18 yards out at the 6:05 mark to make it 48-0 after the Fulmer PAT kick. Stellar play by Jason Hodge and a muffed punt gave LeRoy the ball at the 14 on Perry's next possession. With just over a minute remaining in the 3rd quarter, Kenny Smith plowed in from 4 yards for the score. Jeremy Cosimeno ran in the 2 pt. PAT conversion and it was 56-0 after 3 quarters. LeRoy backup QB Brandon Klinkbeil notched the Knights' final score of the evening with an awesome 17 yd dash around the right side. Tough runs by Jimmy Macaluso and Jeremy Cosimeno set up the Klinkbeil tally. The final score read LeRoy 62, Perry 0.

The Knights will play Avon at noon in the first of 2 Class C semifinal contests this coming Saturday, November 2nd, at nearby St. John Fisher College. The Avon Braves have won 6 of their last 7 games since dropping the home opener to the Knights. The Braves pulled off the stunner of the 2001 season on this same Fisher field when they upended the Cal-Mum Red Raiders in a contest decided on the last play from scrimmage. The winner of the LeRoy-Avon tilt will take on the winner of the game that follows at 3 pm between Cal-Mum and the Pembroke Dragons. These final 4 teams will determine the true champion of Section 5 Class C and Route 5 as well!
