Bath - Week 7 saw the Knights travel to Bath, NY to take on the 2-time defending Section 5 Class B football champion Rams. Bath is a bonafide state power having made it to the State Final 4 in Class B the past 2 seasons where both times they fell to Chenango Forks of Section 4. Coach Wayne Carroll returned 8 starters on defense this season and with the win over the Knights they now have shut out their last 5 opponents. The Rams are strong and physical due to a stellar lifting and conditioning program at the school and it was quite evident in Saturday's contest. Homecoming 2003 for the Bath students saw the locals overpower the 7th ranked Class C team in the state. Several key LeRoy miscues did not help matters.

The Knights started the contest at their 25 and were forced to punt after netting 6 yards on their first 3 plays from scrimmage. The Jake Whiting punt would be returned to the Bath 40 where the Rams looked to establish their strong running game. The Knights met the Rams strong at the outset and forced a 3rd-and-7 for the hosts. The Rams utilized big runs off left tackle by Mike Stromsness and Josh Bajter to enter LeRoy territory to the Knights' 35. A 13-yard pass moved the chains to the LeRoy 22. The Rams plowed forward and chose to go for a first down with a 4th-and-1 scenario at the LeRoy 12. Bajter crashed through the middle of the line to give the Rams the first down just outside the 10-yard line. The Knights cranked it up on defense behind Tim Dieffenbacher, Andrew Fox, Jason Spencer, and Dan Panek to force a 4th-and-5 at the LeRoy 5. Coach Wayne Carroll called upon all-purpose star Keegan Ordway to kick a field goal and Keegan split the uprights from a chip-shot distance of 22 yards. The drive took 7 minutes off the clock.

Slade Fitch returned the ensuing kickoff to the LeRoy 25 for the Knights' second drive start. The Rams, led by stalwart Amsey Remchuk, were all over the Knights' offense, stuffing the LeRoy backs for minus 1 yard on this series. The LeRoy punt was returned to the Bath 45 and a motion penalty backed it up 5 yards to the 40. Josh Bajter smashed through the middle of the line for a 22-yd burst to put the Rams at the LeRoy 38. Hampered by penalties and a surging LeRoy defense, the Rams dropped back to pass on 3rd-and-17 from the Knights' 45. Brandon Klinkbeil picked off the pass deep down the field and Knights took over at their own 11-yard line. Disaster struck just 2 plays later with but 8 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Knights fumbled the ball and Remchuk recovered it for the Class B champs at the 14. The Rams turned to the powerful Bajter who crashed over from 2 yards out for the first Bath TD of the day at the 11:32 mark of the 2nd quarter. The play previous Bajter had fumbled the ball only to have teammate Jason Hopkins gain possession of the ball to keep the scoring drive alive. Ordway added the PAT kick to make it 10-0 Bath.

The Knights looked to respond to the challenge. Slade Fitch had a nice return of the kickoff to start the Knights at their 30-yard line. Tim Judge picked 8 yards on first down and Andrew Fox picked notched the Knights' first down with a solid run into the swarming Rams. Judge followed with another big gainer to the Bath 43. Brandon Klinkbeil executed a perfect shovel pass to Fox to put the Knights in striking range at the Bath 25. Several plays later the drive was stopped dead in its tracks when an offensively tipped pass was deflected to a Ram defender who returned it to the Bath 46. Bajter picked up 11 yards to move the ball into LeRoy territory to the 43. The Ram drive was stymied when Jake Whiting crashed through to sack the Bath QB, forcing the hosts to punt on 4th down.

The Knights started at their 13 with 5:18 remaining in the first half. The LeRoy tandem of Judge and Fox continued to run well and the Knights again entered Bath territory. The drive was halted once more by a Knights' hiccup as Klinkbeil was intercepted at the Bath 30. The score at halftime was 10-zip Bath as the Knights were reeling from 3 consecutive series stopped short by turnovers.

Bath received the ball to start the second half of action as Ordway returned the pigskin to the Bath 39. The Rams moved the ball well against the Knights utilizing the bruising pair of Bajter (164 yards on the day) and Stromsness (119 yards on 15 carries). Ordway hauled in a tight spiral from the Bath QB to give the Rams a first down at the LeRoy 40. Bajter smashed and crashed through the LeRoy would-be tacklers on the next 3 plays picking up 6, 12, and 22 yards. The latter was good for a Bath TD at the 8:44 mark and the Rams let it be known that they were in total control with the score 17-0 in their favor.

A penalty on the ensuing kickoff gave the Knights tough field position at their own 10. Klinkbeil hooked up with receivers Fitch and Judge to move the ball out to the 36 for some breathing room. Mike Farabella made his first carry of the day an exciting one for the Knights as he scampered right and cut back left to pick up 11 yards on the tough Rams defense. The Knights made it to midfield before Klinkbeil was sacked by 3 Rams. The LeRoy punt gave the Rams a drive start at their 25. More Bajter. Some tough inside running followed by a 21-yard gain put the Rams into LeRoy territory in a hurry. Several plays later Mike Stromness blasted around his left end to find the end zone 38 yards away to break the Knights' spirit at the 3:09 mark of the 3rd quarter. The PAT kick made it 24-0 Bath.

The Knights saw the kickoff sail over their heads to earn a 20-yard line drive start. Andrew Fox powered for 2 fine runs that collected 12 yards and a first down. A 3rd-and-8 from the 34 saw Jake Whiting snare a pass from Klinkbeil and get knocked out of bounds close to a first down. The ball was just short of first down distance and the Knights chose to fake the punt from their own 42 in an attempt to maintain control of the ball. The snap was bobbled and the Rams took over at the LeRoy 21 with time running out in the 3rd quarter.

Bajter ran the ball the next 4 times for the Rams before he coughed it up on a fumble at the LeRoy 25 with 11:02 remaining in the contest. The Knights could collect only 3 yards on downs 1 through 3 and decided once again to gamble for a first down with a fake punt from their own 28. The play was unsuccessful and the Rams took over possession at the 28. Those 28 yards were consumed on 5 consecutive runs by Bajter who took it into the end zone for the final score of the game from 10 yards out with 7:56 remaining. The Knights were unable to prevent the goose egg in their final possessions and the final read 31-0 Bath. The Rams had shown their followers that their state ranking of 14 in New York Class B may soon improve to the top 10 with the sectionals to start this coming week.
