LE ROY -
The difference between a well-established program and one in a rebuilding
phase was never more evident than at Hartwood Park Friday. Le Roy has
a program that is competing for a sectional title every year while Batavia
has recycled several coaches in recent years and is far from a powerhouse
in the Monroe County League. |

The outcome
of this game was determined very early on as it was clear that the Blue
Devils weren't going to be able to move the ball against the tough Le
Roy defense. |

had another three-and-out and Bennetti did the job running the ball on the
ensuing possession. Bennetti - who had 11 attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown
- had three straight carries and four on the drive, scoring on a 6-yard
run. "I enjoy running the ball," Bennetti said. "I didn't really get the chance my first two years and it's something I like doing. It's good that I have a good backup and if I get injured we will be okay." Le Roy took a 23-0 lead going into the half as Travis Fenstermaker hit a 41-yard field goal as the time ticked off the clock. Batavia fumbled the ball away right away to open the second half and Ian Humphrey capped off a short scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown run, making the score 30-0. Humphrey had three attempts for 31 yards while Bestor led all rushers with 90 yards and a TD on 16 carries. "They compliment each other very well," Moran said. "Tommy runs hard and Ian is a slasher - he's a kid that can make a cut on a dime and go the distance." Batavia had another quick punt and Le Roy turned the ball over on downs before the Blue Devils finally figured out what to do offensively - get the ball in the hands of J.J. Cabrera. Mazur tossed a 36-yard scoring strike to the speedy junior. ""He's a kid I'm real proud of," Geiger said of Cabrera. "He's gotten focused on what he needs to do and he doesn't let things rattle his cage. He did a great job dealing with pressure and played hard. He can make plays." Bestor wrapped up the game's scoring late in the third quarter with a 38-yard touchdown run. "All I do is find the hole and just run," Bestor said. "I don't care what gets in my way." Batavia (0-1) will host Greece Arcadia at VanDetta Stadium next Friday night while the Oatkan Knights (1-0) host rival Caledonia-Mumford at 7:30 p.m. "Caledonia/Le Roy is Caledonia/Le Roy," Moran said. "They are going to get ready to go and so are we. It'll be a war next Friday night here. We just need to get better mentally and be prepared." |
