ROCHESTER
- You wouldn't think Mark Bennetti was going to throw two touchdown passes
to Justin Becker in Sunday's Section 5 Class C semifinal at PAETEC Park.
It was cold, windy and a day made for running the football. But Bennetti
threw two huge TD passes to his favorite target and the third-seeded Oatkan
Knights downed No. 2 Pembroke 21-14 in a game that was filled with high
emotions on both sides coming in. |

The
deciding score came right away in the third quarter. Eric Kleckler had
a 16 yard run, but fumbled the ball away on his next attempt and Kevin
Brady recovered it for the Oatkan Knights.
"It was a whole effort by the team," Epps said. "We got off the ball and we've been training all week. It was a long hard week but (the defensive line) got the job done." Le Roy drove 10 plays and Bennetti threw his second touchdown pass to Becker, a 21-yard strike on a fourth-and-11. Pembroke had another chance to score after another Bennetti punt went off the side of his foot. This one went for 21 yards and gave the Dragons the ball at the Le Roy 40 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Pembroke picked up one first down on four plays, but then got stopped on the next fourth down. The Dragons had one more shot to score on a drive that started at midfield and was stopped when McKenrick threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-16 at the Le Roy 46-yard line. "I thought our defense really stepped it up," Bennetti said. "Our defensive line came up huge. Chuck Brandes and Marcus (Epps), those two especially. They played great." Pembroke ends up 7-1 and was the Genesee Region League champion. Le Roy improves to 8-1 and will face Letchworth in the finals next weekend. The Oatkan Knights won the regular season matchup 28-7 in Week 3. "Letchworth might be playing the best football they've played in years," said Le Roy coach Brian Moran. "Tim McMullen will have his team well prepared. Defensively they are very good, very tough and physical people. They've improved since Week 3. We have to get ready to play. I'm glad to see two Livingston County Division II teams in the finals." |
