LEROY - When
you have one of the best players in Section 5 on your team, give him the
ball.
That's exactly what the Le Roy football team did in the second half as
Brady Bonacquisti had a ton of carries in leading the Oatkan Knights to
a 20-12 win over visiting Batavia at Hartwood Park.
"Coach said we were going to do what we like to do and that's run
the football," Bonacquisti said. "He said I was going to get
15 or 20 carries if we had to."
Batavia had a 12-0 lead at the half and the Oatkan Knights were determined
to give Bonacquisti the ball. He finished the game with 29 carries for
119 yards, most of which came in the second half.
"Brady ran very hard," Le Roy coach Brian Moran said. "We
knew he'd run hard. We needed to do what we do and run the football."

Le Roy received
the second half kickoff and Bonacquisti had seven straight carries and
10 of 11 on a 60-yard scoring drive that was capped off with a Bonacquisti
2-yard scoring plunge.
"I was pretty pumped up," Bonacquisti said. "I didn't say
much at halftime, but in my head I knew I was ready to go. I knew we were
going to score on our first drive."
Rob Williams had a 35-yard kickoff return, giving the Blue Devils great
starting field position, but Batavia went 3-and-out. Le Roy had another
long drive late in the third quarter and wound up with a touchdown on
a Bonacquisti 4-yard run. The Oatkan Knights converted on a fourth-and-2
on the drive as quarterback Travis Fenstermaker had a 3-yard keeper. The
drive was 16 plays for 80 yards and took over seven minutes off the clock.
After a penalty moved the extra point attempt back five yards, Fenstermaker
kicked it through the uprights, giving Le Roy the 13-12 lead. Batavia
failed to convert its first two extra point attempts and Fenstermaker
missed his first attempt.
Cabrera had a 33-yard return on the kickoff, but Batavia failed to score
again. After Williams had
a 16-yard run and a false start penalty, Mike Humphrey picked off a Williams
pass attempt to give Le Roy the ball at its own 20-yard line. Williams
was locked in on Cabrera on the first-and-15 play and Humphrey had the
interception from the minute it left Williams' hand.
Le Roy struggled to move the ball and had to punt it away on the ensuing
drive. With just under 3 1/2 minutes left in the game, Batavia was pressing.
The Blue Devils had a 7-yard loss on a run and another penalty - their
ninth of the game - and turned the ball over on downs at the Batavia 21.
Fenstermaker threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Alexander with 26
seconds left on the clock. Williams returned the kickoff 30 yards to the
Batavia 45-yard line, but time ran out on Batavia before a drive could
get going.

Things
were very different in the first half of the game as the Blue Devils played
near-perfect football, gaining 210 yards compared to Le Roy's 59.The Batavia
offensive line dominated Le Roy's and the Blue Devil skill players came
up huge.
Batavia's first score came in the middle of the first half after Cabrera
made a spectacular catch and turned it into a 53-yard gain. Williams scored
on a 5-yard keeper with about nine minutes left in the first half.
Ian Humphrey fumbled on Le Roy's first play on the next drive and Brian
Ace recovered it for Batavia. Cabrera touched the ball on four consecutive
plays and Williams wound up scoring on a 15-yard run, giving the Blue Devils
a 12-0 lead.
The biggest play of the game wound up happening on the next Le Roy drive,
and it may end up being the reasonthe Oatkan Knights keep their 40 game
home win streak alive.
Fenstermaker clearly lateraled a ball to his receiver, but it was ruled
an incomplete pass. Cabrera had picked up the ball and was on his way to
the end zone when the play was whistled dead.
"We can't change what we can't control," Geiger said. "We
can't control an official's call. We need to accept that it was the call
and move on from there."
"There are some things you can't control," Cabrera said. "I'm
not going to say the ref was wrong. It's hard to watch what's going on and
catch something real quick. If I were looking at it, I'd rule it a fumble."
Batavia starts the year 0-1, but should consider the loss a huge moral victory.
The Blue Devils will play at Greece Arcadia at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
"I'm very proud of these kids," Batavia coach Dan Geiger said.
"They came out against a great team and gave them a game. I couldn't
ask for more out of these kids."
Le Roy starts 1-0 and will be at Letchworth in a rematch of last season's
Class C title game.
"It really is (a wakeup call)," Bonacquisti said of Friday's game.
"We know we can lose any game when the other team plays like that.
They are a really good team." |
