The LeRoy Knights, after trailing early 7-0, went on to a resounding 41-25 victory over the visiting Letchworth Indians on Friday evening at Hartwood Park. The Knights offense was in full gear throughout the contest as the locals amassed 426 total yards, picking up a total of 21 first downs. The Indians led by head coach Tim McMullen (LeRoy Class of 1975) came to town as advertised, young and tough with a talented QB Travis Tones leading the way. The Knights'
first drive stalled and a Travis Fenstermaker punt pinned the Indians
at their own 6 yard line. Letchworth quarterback Tones found a hole
in the LeRoy D on the Indians' 5th offensive play and sped 77 yards
to paydirt to put Letchworth on the scoreboard 6 minutes into the contest.
Tones also booted the PAT kick to make it 7-0 Letchworth. LeRoy trailed
early in last week's season opener in Batavia. As in that contest, the
offense looked to tie matters up quickly. The Knights "O"
marched down the field behind the speed and power running of Andrew
Alexander and Jon Casper respectively. QB Travis Fenstermaker hit "
Q " Quentin Humphrey with a 5-yard TD strike and added the PAT
conversion to knot the score at 7. The LeRoy defense, led by leading tacklers Mike Humphrey, John Scheuing, and Joe Schwab, continued their strong play, forcing another Letchworth punt on the Indians' next possession. QB Fenstermaker marched the Knights' offense down the field to another tally, finishing the drive with a 1 yard sneak. Travis split the uprights on the PAT and the Knights were now in command 21-7. The score remained as such to halftime as a last minute drive by the Knights fell just short in the waning moments of the first half. Again,
as in last week's Batavia game, the Knights came out fired up for the
2nd half. A 7-play 67-yard drive filled the bill to order as Jon Casper
notched his second TD of the game with a 2 yard blast just under 3 minutes
into the 2nd half. Fenstermaker's kick put the score at LeRoy 28, Letchworth
7. Four minutes later, speedster Tyrone Wyckoff cut through the Letchworth
defense for a brilliant 37- yard TD off the left side of the LeRoy line
to push the lead to 35-7 after the PAT. Coach
Moran went to the reserves and the Indians earned two running TDs from
QB Tones (8 yards) and RB Quincy Pringle (4 yards) to make the final
41-25 Knights. A drive started by a successful Letchworth onside kick
was thwarted in the waning moments as Mike Humphrey put the final touches
to an all-around outstanding evening with a leaping interception near
the LR goal line. |
