| LEROY
- The varsity football Knights picked up their 40th straight victory at
Hartwood Park with a 36-0 shutout win over the visiting Canisteo-Greenwood
Redskins to celebrate Homecoming 2008.
The Casper brothers Jordan "Haystack" and Jon " Hippo" along with Eric Stella and Travis Fenstermaker made sure that Homecoming was a successful evening on the gridiron as they spearheaded a defense that held the Redskins to 128 total yards. Andrew Alexander paced the offensive assault with 152 rushing yards on 18 attempts and 2 TDs, Fenstermaker completed 7 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a TD, and Mike Humphrey caught 6 passes for 98 yards and a score. LeRoy stopped C-G on their first drive when Mike Humphrey snagged his 3rd INT of the young season and marched to a quick 7-0 lead when Fenstermaker scored on a 1-yard sneak. Key plays in the drive were an Alexander 26-yard dash and a 14-yard toss to Mike Humphrey. Jordan Casper and Stella made key stops on the next Redskins drive, forcing a punt to the LeRoy 38. Alexander ripped of a stellar 46-yard TD run. Fenstermaker added the PAT kick to give the host Knights a 14-0 lead with 1:59 remaining in the 1st quarter. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Alexander found the end zone again on a 6-yard run. Mike Humphrey tossed a 2-point PAT pass to John Scheuing to make the margin 22-0 with 7:22 remaining until the halftime Homecoming festivities. Later in the quarter, a Fenstermaker to M. Humphrey 20-yard toss made for a 26-0 halftime lead for the Knights. Early in the 3rd quarter the 'Men in Black' drove 72 yards with Jon Casper blasting in from the 3 for a TD. Quentin Humphrey notched the PAT kick for the final points of the contest to make the final 36-0 Knights. Brandon Monteleone, Vince Kovach, Donnie Pangrazio, Mike Gombos, and Jordan Boyd lead the defensive effort in the 2nd half to preserve the shutout win. LeRoy (4-0) now goes on the road to face the Avon Braves this Friday, before returning home to face archrival Cal-Mum and Hornell for the final games of the regular season. The Knights are currently ranked #1 among small schools in the Democrat and Chronicle coaches poll and are #5 in the latest Class C state rankings. |

LEROY - When the Le Roy football team played Canisteo-Greenwood last season, they were up 56-0 at the half. A much improved Redskins team gave Le Roy a game for a while before the Oatkan Knights started putting up points in winning 36-0, giving the homecoming crowd an offensive and defensive show. It was the 40th consecutive win at Hartwood Park for Le Roy, which last lost at home to Hornell, 7-0, in 1998. C-G failed to move the ball down the field on its first drive of the game with a shotgun/option offense that was later making Le Roy defenders miss. But, the first drive didn't lead to much of anything. Quarterback Mark Ahearn tried finding a receiver on the left side of the field, but Mike Humphrey - who led the state in interceptions last year - picked off the pass with a high vertical jump. Le Roy quickly capitalized on the drive that started at the C-G 11 when Travis Fenstermaker scored on a 1-yard keeper. On their
next offensive series, the visiting Redskins moved the ball to midfield
before the Le Roy defense forced a punt. After Fenstermaker hooked up
with Humphrey on a short pass, Andrew Alexander busted off a 46-yard
touchdown run, giving Le Roy a The Redskins marched again, but Humphrey put the drive to an end with another interception. He returned this one from the Le Roy 15 to the 49. Fenstermaker had a 16-yard run and found Humphrey on a 26-yard pass, setting up a 6-yard TD run for Alexander. Le Roy faked the extra point on this one and Humphrey - who is also the holder - found John Scheuing for the two point conversion. The Oatkan Knights added one more score in the first half when Fenstermaker found Humphrey on a 20-yard TD pass. It was the sixth time this season the two have connected on touchdown passes. Le Roy's only second half touchdown was a 1-yard touchdown run by Jon Casper. Fenstermaker went 7-of-12 for 128 yards and Humphrey hauled in six receptions for 98 yards. Alexander rushed for 152 yards and the two scores on 18 carries as Le Roy improves to 4-0 and prepares for a tough stretch. The Oatkan Knights will face Avon, Caledonia-Mumford and Hornell to finish off the regular season. |
