The Homecoming crowd at Avon was treated to an offensive explosion Friday night as the the visiting Oatkan Knights and the home Avon Braves combined for 753 yards of total offense and 86 total points in LeRoy's 49-37 win over a very talented Avon team. The Knights (#2 in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle small school football poll and #5 in New York state among Class C schools) move to 5-0 with the win as they prepare for this Friday evening's clash with the unbeaten (5-0) Cal-Mum Red Raiders. Avon received the opening kickoff and looked to set the tone from the outset. LeRoy's defense held the Braves to a 3-and-out as Avon QB Max Barrett's first 3 passes fell incomplete. Little did anyone know of the scoring fest that was to follow this stalled drive. Mike Humphrey returned the Avon punt 10 yards to midfield. A Travis Fenstermaker to John Scheuing completion was good for 13 yards and a Jon Casper 10-yard blast set up a Fenstermaker to Mike Humphrey 6-yard score. ,The Knights went for 2 after a Avon penalty placed the PAT attempt closer to the goal line. Andrew Alexander broke into the end zone and the Knights went on top 8-0 with 7:14 showing on the 1st quarter clock. It took the Braves just 3 plays and 1:10 to tie the score at 8-all as Barrett raced 63 yards for a score. Sophomore RB Rich Welch's 2-point PAT run knotted the contest. The teams then traded punts. A Jordan Casper fumble recovery gave the Knights the pigskin at the Avon 48 with 1:26 left in the quarter. A 22-yard scramble by Fenstermaker set up a 7-yard scoring toss, once again to star WR Mike Humphrey. Fenstermaker booted the PAT kick and the Knights went up 15-8 a minute and a half into the 2nd quarter. Again the Braves struck quickly, as Barrett hit Garrett Kesel for 30 yards and Eric Hendrick raced the final 25 yards to tie the game at 15. It took only 2:13 for the Avon TD. The game was taking on shades of last season's Bishop Ludden contest, Mike Humphrey returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to the Avon 34. The Knights moved to the Avon 1 only to be turned back, on a terrific 4th down stop by the Braves. On Avon's 2nd down after the change of possession, LR's Tyrone Wyckoff tipped Barrett's pass into the reach of teammate Quentin Humphrey who ran 8 yards with the interception to once again put the Knights on the board. Fenstermaker added the PAT kick to put the visitors up 22-15 with 3:29 left in the half. Avon's Garrett Kesel returned the Knights' kickoff 60 yards to the LeRoy 35. On the Braves' 3rd play of the drive, Rich Welch raced 35 yards to the end zone to fire up the Avon crowd. QB Barrett split the uprights and the contest was again tied, now at 22, as 2:49 remained until intermission. The Oatkan Knights' offense came up big once again as a 65-yard, 12-play drive culminated with a 3rd TD pass of 6 yards from Fenstermaker to Mike Humphrey. The PAT kick gave the Knights a 29-22 lead as both teams headed to the locker room. LeRoy took the 2nd half kickoff and methodically marched 70 yards in 16 plays, using "smashmouth" LeRoy football at its best. Jon Casper's 2-yard run ended the drive that consumed 8:15 off the clock. Key 1st downs were made possible with an Andrew Alexander run on 3rd-and-4 and a Jon Casper 4th-and-1 conversion at the Braves' 27. Just when the Knights seem to be in control, Avon's Max Barrett took matters into his own hands, make that feet, as he raced 56 yards through the Knights' D to pull the Braves within a TD at 36-29 with 2:43 left in quarter #3. The off-season weight training and hard work were paying off for Barrett who was playing simply spectacular football. The 4th quarter showcased the Andrew Alexander show as he returned an Avon fumble 51 yards for a key score to once again give the Knights a 2-TD cushion at 43-29 with 8:55 was left in the game. The Braves, refusing to give up, moved the ball all the way to the LeRoy 1 before DE Eric Stella put a halt to the scoring opportunity by recovering a fumble in the the end zone to register a timely touchback for the Knights. Four plays later, Alexander rips off a 68-yard run to boost the LeRoy lead to 49-29. Not done yet , the Braves added a Barrett to Pat Hayes 35-yard TD completion and PAT conversion to put the final tally at LeRoy 49, Avon 37. The Knights amassed 318 yards of rushing with Alexander picking up 198 yards on 28 carries. Fenstermaker was 6-of-10 passing for 53 yards and 3 TDs, all to wideout Mike Humphrey who added another non-scoring catch for 4 total. Jordan Casper, with 8 stops and a forced fumble, Brandon Monteleone also with 8 tackles (4 solo), and Eric Stella with the key fumble recovery, paced the LR D. |
