After
three lopsided wins it remained to be seen how the Junior Knights
would respond to adversity. Facing archrival and undefeated
Cal-Mum this game resembled a heavyweight title fight. Unlike
a wobbly Mike Tyson, the Knights got off the canvas, fighting
for a heart thumping 21-14 victory.
Losing the coin toss for the 4th straight game, LR receives
the ball first, going 3-and-out. After a fine punt return, CM
starts at the LR 29. On 1st down going for it all, Josh Risewick
intercepts the pass at the 7 ending the CM drive.
In poor field position, 3 straight running plays net 9 yds.
On 4th and 1, Travis Fenstermaker punts the ball away. A very
good CM punt return is negated by a penalty, but still puts
the ball in LR territory at the 45.
CM kept the ball on the ground driving to the LR 13. Facing
a 1st-and-10, the Knights defense stiffens holding the Red Raiders
on downs at the 13. In particular, the LR secondary led by Josh
Risewick and Mike Humphrey broke up passes on 3rd and 4th downs.
In poor field position again, LR goes 3-and-out and punts the
ball away. Starting on LR's side of field at the 46, CM runners
start to punish the Jr. Knights defense. Needing only 7 plays,
CM's John Marozzi scores on a sweet 12 yd run. The run for PAT
fails - CM 6-0. Marozzi picks up 35 yds on 4 attempts in the
drive.
On their 4th possession starting at their own 29, LR loses 3
yds on the drive. Punting after another dismal 3-and-out, CM
receives the ball at their 49.
Red Raider running backs are gaining strength, bouncing off
Knight defenders picking up extra yards. Marozzi bulls up the
middle for a 9 yd TD run to cap the drive. The run for the PAT
is good - CM 14-0.
Gaining just 2 yds of total offense on 4 possessions of 3-and-out,
the Knights were down for the count. But like all good boxers
they rose off the canvas.
Ian Humphrey returned the kickoff to the LR 40, the best drive
start of the game for the Knights. Facing a 2nd-and-14 LR QB
Travis Fenstermaker completes a 11 yarder to Greg Elmore. Humphrey
picks up 12 for the FD. After a LR penalty, Fenstermaker scrambles
out of the pocket for 18 yds. Three plays later, facing a 4th-and-2,
Ian picks up 2 tough yards to keep the LR drive alive. On 3rd-and-7
from the 15, Ian picks up 10 to the CM 5. Fenstermaker dives
in from the one yd out for the LR score. Travis kicks the PAT
and the CM lead is now 14-7. A classic LR drive: 60 yds in 13
plays using 6:22 off the clock.
Coming out for the 2nd half, the Knights defense needed to hold
or come up with a turnover. On 3rd down Mike Humphrey intercepts
the ball, returning it 13 yds to the CM 36.
Ian Humphrey carries the ball 6 straight plays to the CM 8.
Needing a breather, Ian leaves the game and Kory Cosimeno picks
up the final 8 yds on 2 rushes for the LeRoy TD,the last a 5
yarder. Fenstermaker kicks the PAT, and the game is tied at
14.
Starting from their own 49, CM's Marozzi rips off a 14-yarder.
Mike Humphrey makes the tackle in the secondary, saving a possible
CM TD. The next 3 plays Marozzi gains only 2 yds due to the
fine tackling of Charlie Brandes, Jourdain Holly, Greg Elmore,
and Ian Humphrey. Staring at a 4th-and-8 from the LR 35, the
Red Raiders decide to go for it. Chris
Andrews recovers the CM fumble in the backfield to end the drive
for the hosts.
Momentum has shifted to the Knights. After a 7 yd loss on 1st
down, Ian Humphrey makes a spectacular 60 yd run, weaving in
and out of defenders to the CM 11. A face mask penalty pushes
the ball to the 6. On 4th-and-goal from the 1, Ian drags the
CM defender into the end zone for the score. Fenstermaker kicks
the PAT. The Knights take their first lead at 21-14 with 1:41
left in the 3rd.
On the ensuing kickoff, the LR kickoff team creates a turnover.
Chris Andrews hits the CM runner, forcing the fumble. Fenstermaker
pounces on the ball giving LR possession at the CM 42. A LR
turnover gives the ball back 3 plays later. Just 2 plays later,
Kory Cosimeno recovers a CM fumble to end the 3rd quarter.
Sensing a touchdown could put this game away, the CM defense
rises to the occasion. Sacking
Fenstermaker on 2nd down gives the Knights a long 3rd-and-27.
Following an Elmore run, LR punts the ball away.
After picking up just one first down the Red Raiders punt the
ball back to the Knights. The Raider D again steps it up a notch
to force a LR punt and one more drive for a potential game-winning
drive.
The Raiders start at their own 45 with 4:00 left. Marozzi converts
a 3rd-and-2 2 for a 7-yarder to put the ball at the LR 40. After
a run of 2 yds, a costly LR face mask penalty takes the ball
to the 23. On 2nd down CM completes the pass and LR's Mike Humphrey
makes the tackle at the 6, preventing the Raider TD.
1:41 remaining - CM has 1st and goal at the 6. Greg Elmore stops
the CM runner after a gain of 2.
On 2nd down, Joe Carubia and Josh Risewick make the stop after
another gain of 2. CM calls their final timeout with 47 seconds
remaining in the game. Third down sees Elmore and Andrews hold
the runner to a 1 yd gain, forcing the CM offense to hurry to
the line of scrimmage. The Raider QB spots his receiver open
in the end zone, but Josh Risewick closes fast and breaks up
the pass, ending the drive.
LeRoy now stands at 4-0. Next up is a home encounter on Sept.
29th against always tough Hornell.
