The
JV Knights hosted Avon on October 13th and it turned out to
be a nice autumn evening in every sense of the word for the
Jr. Knights.
Receiving the football first, LeRoy needed only 5 plays to travel
53 yards for the TD. Ian Humphrey rushes for 2 yards on the
first play from scrimmage to reach 1,000 yards on the season.
Four plays later Ian went into the end zone from the 3 to score.
Travis Fenstermaker kicks the PAT, LR 7-0.
The Knights' defense forces a 3-and-out. On 4th down, Chris
Andrews blocks the punt setting up the Knights 2nd drive start
on the Avon 31. Following some fine blocking by the offensive
line, Ian Humphrey completes the drive in just one play, darting
in for the TD. Fenstermaker kicks the PAT, LR 14-0.
Avon picks up a 1st down on the next series converting a 4th-and-1.
Greg Elmore stuffs the runner for a loss of 4 and Josh Risewick
breaks up a pass attempt on 3rd down to force an Avon punt.
Mike Humphrey fields the punt and returns the ball up the right
sideline 31 yards to the Avon 37.
Due to penalties on the first 2 plays this drive lasted 3 plays
as Ian Humphrey ran it in from 45 yards for the score. Fenstermaker
kicks the PAT, LR 21-0.
Avon gets excellent field position at their 46 after a short
kickoff. Facing 4th-and-4, the Braves' QB completes a 7-yarder
to keep the chains moving. On 2nd down, Jamie Storms storms
into the backfield and sacks the QB for an 8-yard loss. Kory
Cosimeno nails the runner for a 2-yard loss, forcing the 3rd
Avon punt.
The Knights start at their own 23 and Travis Fenstermaker leads
a Tom Brady-like drive, going through the air exclusively. First
Travis scrambles out of the pocket and hits Cosimeno for 19
yards. Next he throws a bubble screen to Mike Humphrey for 13.
Two more completions to Mike Humphrey for 11 and 14 yards moves
the ball down to the Avon 20. Travis then connects with Josh
Risewick for a 20-yard TD pass. Fenstermaker is 5-for-5 on the
drive for 77 yards in just 1:39. The PAT fails, LR 27-0.
The very first play of the Avon drive sees Cosimeno intercept
the pass, returning it 12 yards to the Avon 23. Ian Humphrey
picks up 5, then Greg Elmore drags defenders for 7 more. Ian
takes it in from the 11 for the TD with 8:35 left in the 2nd,
ending the day for the first-stringers. The PAT fails, LR 33-0.
Andrew Alexander ends the next Avon series intercepting the
pass at midfield, but the Knights give the ball back on downs.
Alexander intercepts a second pass to thwart the next series
for the Braves. Starting on the Avon 45, LeRoy starts their
final drive of the 1st half. Travis Hurd picks up 14 yards on
2 carries. Alexander picks up 6 and 10 down to the Avon 20.
Two more carries by Hurd takes the ball to the 8. Enter John
Scheuing. As time is winding down, Scheuing plows to the one
and as time expires he plunges into the end zone. The PAT fails
again and the half ends with the Jr. Knights ahead by a comfortable
39-0 margin.
Starting the 2nd half Avon returns the kickoff 82 yards for
the touchdown. PAT fails, LR 39-6.
The 1st drive of the 2nd half for LeRoy started with 2 Hurd
gains for 5. Alexander rips off 14 yards to move the chains.
Alexander for 6, then Hurd gains 12 for another 1st down. Hurd
for 3, Alexander picks up 12 for a first down to the Avon 15.
Alexander for 1, then Steve Smith powers the ball to the 6,
setting up a 3rd-and-1. Smith gains 2 for the apparent 1st down,
but a holding call backs the ball to the 14. Facing 3rd-and-9,
Mike Humphrey rolls to the right, hitting Brian Calmes at the
5, Brian shakes off the tackler, running in for the score. Fenstermaker
kicks the PAT and the score reads LeRoy 46, Avon 6. The drive
covered 11 plays and 62 yards.
Following an Avon 1st down, Jordan Casper stops the runner for
no gain. Travis Pangrazio then sacks the QB for a loss of 12,
setting up a long 3rd down. Mike Humphrey picks off the football,
returning it 26 yards to the Avon 45.
Tyrone Wycoff becomes the featured LR runner in the subsequent
series. Carrying the ball 4 straight times, Tyrone gains 8 yards,
just short of a 1st down.
Now into the 4th quarter, Avon starts on their 37. On 3rd-and-5
Nathan Larson and Alex Cardenas string out the Avon runner for
a one-yard loss. Facing 4th-and-6, the Avon receiver turns a
9-yard catch into a TD run for 59 yards. The pass for the PAT
is successful, LR 46-14.
On LR`s next series Travis Hurd cuts to the left, speeding along
for 64 yards before being caught at the one. Avon showing no
quit, stops the Knights on 4 successive running plays, ending
the LR drive at the one.
On the 1st play Avon completes a pass for 31 yards for some
much needed breathing room. Larson and Wycoff chase down the
Avon receiver or it would have been a much bigger gain. The
Knights' defense then stiffens. Cardenas tips the pass at the
line of scrimmage on 1st, Justin Pursel and Brock Pasquale drop
the runner for a 2-yard loss on 2nd, Evan Calmes sacks the QB
for a 4-yard loss on 3rd, and an incomplete pass on 4th down
ends the final Avon series. LeRoy runs out the clock.
LeRoy improves to 7-0. Next up is a road trip to HF-L on October
20th. Last year HFL came into LeRoy undefeated and left with
a loss. The Cougars will be looking for payback.
